Periodontal Disease and Your General Health

What Gum Disease Can Mean For your Overall Health

Periodontal disease & general health are closely related. There is considerable research showing a strong association between the presence of gum disease and numerous other health conditions, with emerging research suggesting that periodontal disease may advance some of these diseases, like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, pneumonia, rheumatoid diseases, adverse pregnancy outcomes, irritable bowel disease and more. When there is the presence of periodontal disease, the bacteria that originates in the mouth, as well as the proteins that collect in the gums, can travel throughout the body and contribute to other serious health problems.

The bacteria from gum disease can enter the bloodstream through the gums and promote clotting that can artery problems and lead to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. One study suggests that infections in the gums release inflammatory proteins that can increase inflammation in the brain, leading to early Alzheimer’s disease. Bacteria from the mouth can also be inhaled or travel through the bloodstream to the lungs, leading to respiratory problems. Periodontal disease may make it more difficult to control blood sugar, putting those with periodontal disease at a higher risk of developing diabetic and associated diabetic complications.

With research suggesting a strong connection between healthy gums and overall good health, it is important to maintain healthy oral habits at home, and schedule regular visits to a dentist and periodontist for checkups, cleanings, and any required treatment.
