What is a periodontist? A periodontist is a dental specialist who deals specifically with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease (commonly known as gum disease) and soft and hard tissue problems around the teeth and dental implants. They also help with the management of any signs of advancing gum problems like oral inflammation.
A periodontist receives additional specialized training beyond dental school. Once completing four years of dental school, a periodontist must successfully complete at least three additional years of formal advanced education in periodontics and receive a designation from the Alberta Dental Associate and College as a Periodontist, having successfully completed a national examination.
